E-Learning HIPAA Overview

The Business Problem
In 1996, Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA). The purpose of the legislation is to provide:

  • Increased portability of health insurance through limitation on preexisting condition exclusions
  • Prevention of health care fraud and abuse
  • Protection of patient information
  • Establishment of standards for electronic systems handling medical information including privacy, security, transaction codes and handling procedures.

Hospitals, Insurance carriers, physicians, and other health services providers need to understand how this legislation affects their daily workflow.

The TechProse Solution
TechProse developed an e-learning HIPAA overview to educate a broad spectrum of health care providers on the basic principles of HIPAA, and the work practices required to conform to the legislation. Designed as a CD-ROM, this standalone e-learning application allowed individual administrators, hospital personnel, physicians, and others to login, complete a series of interactive modules, and record their successful completion of the practice exercises, demonstrating due diligence in HIPAA education. The John Muir Mt. Diablo Health System Director of Telemedicine and Web Technology was a subject matter expert for this CD.
