Case Study: Retail Inventory Training Materials

The Client Profile
Gap, Inc. is a global company with three distinct brands - Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy - with revenues topping $11.6 billion. Gap's 140,000 employees perform sourcing, store operations and supply activities around the world.

The Business Problem
Gap, Inc. was planning rollout for an automated store inventory system that would change the way employees did their job at both individual store and corporate levels. They needed to understand the impact of the new system and how to effectively prepare and train staff for a seamless transition to the new application. In addition to instructor led training, Gap wanted a robust online help system for ongoing user reference.

The TechProse Solution
TechProse developed both the global training program and the online help system, which was designed to provide specific, functional information for each task in the inventory system. The process started by interviewing key representatives from each business area and field representatives from selected stores to understand the impact and needs of potential trainees. The data from these interviews (and online surveys for remote participants) became the basis of a needs analysis, that delineated what training was needed, who needed to be trained, how to effectively deliver the training, and timeline and cost. The analysis and resultant training plan were the foundation for development of a one-day online training course with exercises. TechProse did a "train-the-trainer" session, and Gap personnel did the initial training rollout, with online training available. The templates TechProse designed for this project became Gap's corporate standard.
