Case Study: Transit Mechanics and Operator Training

The Client Profile
San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI) operates buses, electronic coaches, and the historic Cable Cars for the City and County of San Francisco.

Transit Mechanics and Operator Training

The Business Problem
MUNI contracted the design, manufacture, and delivery of 250 electric trolley coaches. As part of this contract, MUNI had extensive requirements for training for their mechanics and operators. The goal was to ensure public safety and proper long-term maintenance of the coaches.

The TechProse Solution
TechProse, as a subcontractor to the manufacturer, developed and delivered 432 hours of training for MUNI's new electronic coaches. In addition, TechProse developed 10 computer-based training (CBT) modules to provide ongoing e-learning for mechanics and operators. This e-learning suite included digitized video instructions for specific safety and repair procedures, simulations, online testing, and central administration of all CBT modules. TechProse gained buy-in from all levels of MUNI personnel for this program by facilitating a full Needs Assessment prior to developing the training plan. As a result, union, management, and training staff all provided input to the final plan, and the deliverables were accepted by staff at all levels.
