Case Study: Web Site Design and Development

The Client Profile
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is the light rail transit system for the San Francisco Bay Area. It provides service from the East Bay through San Francisco, the San Francisco Airport, and the Peninsula as far as Millbrae. BART connects with Caltrain to provide service to the South Bay, and with bus and ferry service through out the Bay Area.

Website Design and Development

The Business Problem
The initial BART web site was designed as a tool primarily for internal staff use. For this reason, it was organized by internal department. Management realized that public access to information required a new design, and issued an RFP.

The TechProse Solution
TechProse was selected to develop the first public-oriented web site for BART. In addition to broad information on all aspects of commuting, the site included a dynamic way to schedule trips, allowing travelers to select timing and routes for complex destinations and purchase tickets online. The new site was organized by user function, and included a database-driven design that allowed staff to update information without any knowledge of programming. The completed site won a "Wheelie" award for best transit site from the American Public Transportation Association, and received commendations for accessibility.
