Case Study: Virtual Reality
San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is located at the far west end of Fisherman's Wharf, across from Ghiradelli Square, and includes the fleet of historic vessels at Hyde Street Pier, the Maritime Museum, and the Maritime Museum Library.
Each year, over a half million visitors board turn-of-the-century ships and tour the museum. The park offers history, music and craft programs for all ages, and provides unique opportunities for docents, interns and volunteers to become part of history.
TechProse initially became involved with the Maritime Park as part of an accessibility project to provide alternate virtual access to the ships through two computer kiosks.
TechProse developed a browser-based interactive virtual tour that allows a visitor to experience what a walk on board one of the eight historic ship would be like, complete with 360 degree zoomable views, and "hotspots" that allow interaction with elements on the ships. This project won an accessibility award from the National Park Service. In addition, the virtual tour proved popular with visitors of all ages and abilities as a supplement to the physical tour of the ships.
This presentation was specially designed to run on a large screen kiosk.
To enjoy the full effect we suggest you set your screen display to a setting of 1280x1024.
It can be viewed with other sizes, but it may effect your viewing experience.
To view the tour, you will need the Apple Quicktime plugin
